Manuel Luis Veneracion is a regular balikbayan who just returned from The Philippines after being away for a year. During his stay he was able to travel through various towns and provinces, cultures and classes from the Northern Cordilleras down into Mindanao. Travelling mostly for the heck of it he also volunteered with the Salinlahi Alliance for Children’s Concerns and the Children’s Rehabiliation Center. He took part in their relief efforts during Typhoon Ondoy as well as several of their other missions and projects. Manuel will share his experiences as a first-time balikbayan as well as show some video and photos from his trip.
This is a good chance for anyone who might be considering doing some volunteer work in the Philippines to learn about what you can do there.

On January 26, 1970, student activists stormed the old Congress building in Manila, where then President Ferdinand Marcos was delivering his State of the Nation Address. It sparked a series of mass actions against the Marcos regime that has come to be known as the First Quarter Storm or FQS.

Rep. Raymond Palatino
Philippine Congressman Raymond “Mong” Palatino spoke to Toronto youth on Sat. Nov. 7, 2009, appealing to the Filipino youth to persist in their resistance, especially against the oppressive practices of the Philippine government under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Rep. Palatino is 29-years old and represents the Kabataan (Youth) Partylist in the Philippine house of Representatives. Rep. Palatino came to Toronto to be part of Kamalayan, which is a series of events for Filipino youth focusing on enriching their “consciousness” of Philippine history, politics, and issues in the Filipino-Canadian community.
Rep. Palatino began his presentation by speaking about the history of youth resistance in the Philippines. As to why Rep. Palatino thought this was important to discuss with youth here, he stated in an interview, “We have to remind our fellow young Filipinos in Canada that the resistance movement is not a modern or late development. The resistance movement has a historical background and an important role in the country’s history and especially in our struggle for independence.
